Help us make "breast cancer" a term that only appears in history books.

Current Projects
Project Hope is a program managed by Susan G. Komen volunteers.  This project was conceived and developed by the Komen Education Committee in order to reach out to the women and men who are newly diagnosed with breast cancer and let them know that they are not alone as they face this new journey.  Our mission is to create the tote bags that will be given to the patients by their doctor.

Volunteers sew quilted tote bags (such as the one shown above) and fill them with comforting items and informational material.  Some of the items in the bag are a beautiful knitted/crocheted  shawl to take to chemotherapy for warmth, a journal, a pocket calendar, life savers, calming tea bags, and lots of information.  The material for the bag is donated and is cut and ready to sew.  All that is needed is thread and a sewing machine.

The Passionate Pink Committee is in the process of contacting local physicians who give the original breast cancer diagnosis to the patients.  The physicians in turn will then give the tote bags to the patients to provide comfort and support.

What do we need from all the volunteers out there?  We are looking for women who can knit or crochet shawls.  The shawls should be approximately 30" W x 64"L, but these dimensions are not set in concrete.  We would like a very soft yarn to be used and light, "happy" colors.

This is a wonderful project that requires someone who knows how to put a lot of love into their part of the project.

If you are interested in helping with this project, please contact any member of the Passionate Pink Committee.  We can be reached at: passionatepinks@comcast.net

PROJECT HOPE
The picture to the left shows Sharon Szepi of the Passionate Pinks delivering the first 12 Project Hope tote bags to Dolores Berube, the Office Manager of Florida Cancer Specialists of Port Charlotte.  This was accomplished on September 11, 2009.  A big THANK YOU to everyone who took the time to sew, knit, crochet, stuff the bags, etc.  Everyone's participation is necessary for this project to be a success.

The majority of the money raised comes to Komen through the largest fundraiser - the Susan G. Komen Southwest Florida Race for the Cure.  The Race is held annually in March.  More than 12,000 supporters, sponsors and volunteers come together to fight breast cancer.  In 2011 this event raised an astounding $1 million dollars thanks to the support of people like you.

75% - Stays in our community and provides education, screening and treatment support services to the women and men of our service area.

25% is applied to breast cancer research through the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Grants Program.

Susan G. Komen is a 4 star rated charity for the 5th year in a row by www.CharityNavigator.org.
